Overview

New healthcare graduates face many challenges as they transition from school to practice, including adapting to new environments, applying their knowledge, and developing new skills.

Medical school graduates

After graduating, medical students complete an internship year, also known as the preliminary year or PGY-1. During this time, they rotate through different specialties, gaining practical experience and improving their clinical skills. They also apply their knowledge to real-world situations by making healthcare decisions. After the internship year, they apply to a residency program that can last two to seven years, depending on their specialty. During residency, they learn to manage patient care independently, develop critical thinking skills, and gain specialized training in their chosen area of medicine.

Nursing graduates

After graduating, nursing students may participate in a pinning ceremony to celebrate their transition into the nursing profession. They then begin their transition to practice, where they must apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world setting. This can be challenging, as they must adapt to the fast-paced, high-pressure environment of healthcare, care for real patients, and make critical decisions. They may also need to improve their communication skills with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals. To help them, healthcare organizations can provide orientation programs, nurse residency programs, mentorship, and coaching. New graduates can also seek support and guidance from experienced nurses and mentors.
